Interview|Yanyou Yuan Di

As part of this year’s Hariban Award 2021 program,  we were grateful to have the chance to interview Juror Yanyou Yuan Di, Founder of Jiazazhi Press/Library. Yanyou shared with us his introduction to photography, his influences and his thoughts on contemporary art and publishing in China today.

Could you share with us some of your earliest experiences with art, specifically photography? How did you come to photography/How did photography come to you?

YYD: I started my career as a magazine editor, and so I came across many magazines from overseas. I looked up those names on Google (at that time it was not blocked by the government yet), and when I found certain articles interesting, I would translate them or introduce them on my blog and share them on Douban, which was an online community that was more popular back then. I found many people who had similar interests in Douban, and through exchanging ideas with these people, as well as Douban’s recommendation system, I gradually got to learn more about different photographers and artists.

What are your thoughts on photography’s relationship to memory? Have they shaped your approach to your practice and if so how?

YYD: Photography replaces certain memories, but photography also degrades memories. The function of replacing memories makes people believe in the authenticity of photography; the function of degrading memories allows photography to be conceptual and to become a form of art.

Who/what have been your biggest influences/mentors? How have they shaped the way you work?

YYD: Hou Hsiao-hsien. His usage of long lenses inspired me to find the subtle connection between film and photography.

In an interview with Ruben Lundgren published by Aperture in 2016, you briefly spoke about the photobook market in China as then being ‘very traditional’. Could you share your reflections on your thoughts since then? Do audiences in China have more access to a wider range of perspectives of photography today than before?

YYD: Not much has changed in terms of publishing. But there are indeed more art bookstores and art book fairs now, so more books have become available to the public.

Could you share with us your thoughts on how contemporary Chinese photography is received in Japan? In what ways have photobooks as a physical medium helped?

YYD: It seems that in Japan, Europe and the United States, there is still a very dogmatic expectation that Contemporary Chinese Art acts as a form of “sexual liberation”, “documentation of poverty in China”, “struggle against the system”, “imagination of traditional China”, etc. There are indeed many excellent contemporary artists and artworks in China, so I hope that through my publication projects, everyone can learn more about Chinese art and the country itself.

The books you have produced have helped  widen perspectives of photography in China and also perspectives from outside. Could you share with us other spaces, artists, publishers, events/activities who you admire or work alongside you? Are there other examples that you’d like to highlight that also work within our region?

YYD: We started ten years ago, and then art publishers such as Same Paper, Imageless, and La Maison de Z came into existence. There are two other art book fairs worth mentioning: Unfold Shanghai Art Book Fair and abC Art Book Fair, both of which are getting better and better. Jiazazhi is also organising an art book festival in Ningbo.

Could you share with us a current project that you are working on which we can look forward to experiencing?

YYD: We are working on Zhang Xiao’s new work “About My Hometown”.

The Hariban Award provides the opportunity for collaboration. What are your thoughts on collaborative processes and in this case with printmaking?

YYD: I think it is a very good attempt, especially in this era when the general public is paying less and less attention to the crafts and techniques—and in a country like China where the collotype printing technique is almost extinct—I am very optimistic about its potential.

Do you have any advice for artists thinking about entering the Hariban Award this year?

YYD: Submit your most characteristic works and be brave in presenting your works in various techniques.

HARIBAN AWARD
