Birthe Piontek

Bio

Birthe Piontek’s photographic practice explores the inter-connections between photographic images, history, and memory. Her work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group shows and is included in many private and public collections, such as the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and the Museum of Applied Arts in Gera, Germany. Piontek is the author of several photography books. The project The Idea of North won the Critical Mass Book Award in 2009 and was published by Photolucida in 2011. Her project Abendlied received the Edward Burtynsky Grant in 2018 and was nominated by Time Magazine as one of the best photo books in 2019. Her most recent project, Zero Hour, will be published in the fall of 2024. Piontek received her MFA from the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany and is an Associate Professor of Photography at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

現在カナダを拠点に活動するドイツ人写真家ビルテ・ピオンテックは、印象的なアート作品『Zero Hour』の中で、ドキュメンタリーと主観的写真の境界線に焦点を当てる。彼女の探求は、歴史にまつわる彼女自身の多くの疑問に対する視覚的返答を見出すことにある。この歴史というのは、ほとんどのドイツ人がそうであるように、いわゆる戦後の祖父母や両親世代の沈黙によるものである。この沈黙のコミュニケーションにどう対処すればいいのか、アイデンティティがはっきりしない葛藤にどう向き合えばいいのか。ピオンテックを含むZ世代は今やすでに人生を全力で生きており、自分の家族を持ち、奇妙な右派ポピュリズムの新しい響きに囲まれ、必死に答えを探している。ここでピオンテックは、視覚的ソリューションの見事で崇高なやり方を発見した。次なるレベルである。即座に私を捉えたものに祝意を贈る。『Zero Hour』の写真集を楽しみにしている。
