In her work A Myth in the Making, Anika Spereiter delves into the relationship between our inner world influences and our perception of the world and the universe. Take light, for example. When an individual is being shone a blinding light from the sky far, far away, they appear as a messenger delivering a message from the universe. Spereiter’s work draws inspiration from the seminal work of Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist Carl Jung, entitled Flying Saucers (1958, original title: Ein moderner Mythus: von Dingen die am Himmel gesehen werden [A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Skies]). Making full use of the medium of photography, a medium that inherently depicts reality, Spereiter attempts to demonstrate how our deep psyche interprets things unconsciously, seeing the unrecognizable unknown (or something perceived as unrecognizable) in the way we want, as if they were part of the reality. Is what seemed real truly real? What is the true nature of this unshakable sense of reality, even though it feels like a dream? I believe that the deep and subtle shadows depicted by the collotype technique would serve to blur the line between reality and fiction, thereby enhancing the beauty of the dreamscape that Spereiter aims to capture.
