HARIBAN AWARD 2024 – Exhibition

Maja Daniels “Gertrud”

Solo Exhibition

16. April – 24. April, 2025
Gensou-an

Gensou-an

Gensou-an is one of the few remaining Kyoto-style tradi-tional merchant houses, located just off the Shijo and Karasuma crossroads in Kyoto’s central city area. The 130-year-old traditional house has been kept beautifully by a Kimono tsumugi mercer, “Hirota Tsumugi”. Hirota Tsumugi was established just after World War II (1946), initially specialising in and being the largest mercery of Yuki Tsumugi silk, known to be the highest quality silk in Japan. They continue to deal with the high-end Kimono fabrics including Yuki Tsumugi and various Japanese traditional craft textiles, while maintaining Gensou-an as their Kimono drapery store even today. Gensou-an preserves not only the architectural value, but also their intangible traditional cultures and Kyoto’s merchant lifestyle, which remarkably remains unchanged even today.
